Especially for Managers

What Do You Say to Wayne and Susan?

As a manager, you've gotten some great visibility with the top boss because of your presentation of new products. But that doesn't mean you can successfully promote any new product idea your people can come up with. Right now, you're working so many hours, you'd be crazy to take on something new. But, Wayne and Susan just keep pushing you to be an advocate for them. They stop just short of saying, "You are our boss. You have to support us." They are so convinced of your powers of persuasion that they haven't bothered to complete their business plan. But you can't risk your reputation on something half-baked.

a)"Wayne and Susan, I know how committed you are to this new product and I'm pleased you have so much faith in my ability to present. First, let me help you with your business plan, and if it turns out that it's a good deal for us once we have run the numbers, I'll pitch it at the next new products meeting."

Choice A

b)"Wayne and Susan, this is an interesting product proposal, but you're coming to me when I haven't got a lot of time to give to you. I'd be happy to help you present your proposal, but since it's your idea I think you both should take the lead. But before that, let's talk about what questions you'll need to be prepared to answer and what data you will need to present. I'm sure you will need help and support from a lot of people, not just me."

Choice B

c)"Wayne and Susan, a product proposal is more than a good idea; it's a complete business plan. What you've got here is a beginning, but it's not anything I can present to the Product Committee. Besides, you know how many hours I am working. You are just not being considerate!"
