Especially for Managers
What Do You Say to Pat?
Pat is a solid performer, but a quiet person. Pat was overlooked by the manager you replaced, but with your help has done very well. You know that Pat is extremely loyal to you. Finally, Pat has taken the initiative you have been suggesting for months and come in to see you about taking on a complex new assignment. Pat says, "I know that this project is a little beyond my experience, but that I could do a good job if I had you as a coach. Before I say yes, I'd like to know if you have the time in the next six months to spend coaching me on project management skills. Without your help, I don't think I will be successful." Pat doesn't know it, but you are interviewing for a new job in a different division. If you get it you'll only be around for another two months. You really can't talk about it yet, but you know Pat is going to feel at a loss without you.

a) "I think I can commit to coaching you for the first phase of the project. So, let's sit down and plan out your approach, including what you will need to learn when. You might want to take a class in project management. We can come up with other people who could coach you on later phases of the project. With more exposure to more people here, you could really develop your career."
Choice Ab) "It's a great move you're making, Pat! I'd be happy to coach you for the next six months."
